Expertise and know-how transfer
The example of Mr Essential
«After 35 years of good and loyal services, Mr Essential retires, together with his know-how. He is actually the only one who masters the industrial means, the operational processes necessary for the smooth running of the factory. He also seems to be the only legitimate manager to the producing teams. The diagnosis is clear: without him, the plant will operate with difficulty. A degraded operation is not possible considering the major industrial risks of this production site, and the concerned know-how are too specific to hope that someone sufficiently skilled will ever be recruited.»
Something must be done quickly:
The know-how must be passed on – to several people if needed – and must be set in stone, so that the factory cannot be in a comparable situation in the future.
Thanks to the methodical approach that is implemented, one can take a step back on the situation and :
- Get a clear vision of the knowledges and know-how that are at stakes, to clarify the scope of the activities
- Precisely determine what the job represents, to identify the know-how to be secured in priority, the activities that could jeopardize the company if they were lost,
- Define modalities of transmission consistent with the context and the constraints of the concerned sector, by encouraging the involvement of all the stakeholders in the organization.

The results are immediate:
- not only production is maintained, but it is even improved.
- The organization is sustainable.
- Operation is no longer put at stake by the loss of know-how.
- The organization is autonomous in its skills management. All stakeholders on site now feel concerned and involved in mastering the know-how.
